How Engagement Rings Originated

The tradition of engagement rings traces its origins back to Ancient Rome, where the custom of exchanging rings during ceremonies first began. The rings were often made of copper, flint, and iron.Although engagement rings are now a symbol of love, in Ancient Rome, the giving of a ring represented ownership of the woman. In addition to its presence in Rome, the ring symbol held significant importance in ancient Egypt. Pharaohs perceived rings as symbols of eternity, their circular form signifying endlessness with no beginning or end. Egyptologist Dr Flora Anthony Egyptologist Dr Flora Anthony expands on this,

“The concept of the ouroboros is from ancient Egypt. It’s a snake that eats its tail and is thus ring-shaped. As a concept, it relates to eternity. So you could say that the circle or the ring shape does carry notions of eternity, even in ancient Egypt.

Why are Engagement Rings Worn on the Left Hand?

In most Western countries, the tradition of wearing engagement rings on the left hand symbolises love. But who started this tradition? It's believed that the placement of the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand was initiated by the Romans. They attributed significance to this finger as they believed it contained the 'Vein of Love.' While scientifically inaccurate, this belief persists as the reason behind the placement of engagement rings on this finger.

The Emergence of Diamond Engagement Rings

The first recorded instance of a diamond engagement ring dates to the 15th century. In 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg proposed to Mary of Burgandy with a diamond ring. Around this time, diamonds were extremely rare and only purchased by the wealthy. However, this attitude changed in Britain in 1999. Retailer De Beers unveiled the most genius campaign, using the simple slogan “A Diamond Is Forever”. In effect, this convinced couples that a marriage is not complete without a diamond ring on a finger.

Unveiling the Legacy of Victorian Engagement Rings

The 18th century marked a period of exploration and industrialisation, greatly benefiting the affluent Victorians. In 1867, the discovery of diamond deposits in South Africa made diamonds more accessible. For the Victorians, diamond engagement rings symbolised prosperity and opulence. During this period, Queen Victoria's romantic relationship with Prince Albert captured the nation's attention. This heightened public interest in engagements and marriages, contributing to the growing popularity of the tradition of exchanging rings.

The Allure of Art Deco Engagement Rings

The Art Deco movement flourished during the 1920s and 1930s, renowned for its geometric patterns and vibrant colour schemes. Art Deco rings often featured bold gemstones like jade, citrine, and onyx, set against platinum bands to accentuate their striking designs. However, Art Deco transcended mere aesthetics; its designs symbolised technological progress and the era of globalisation. The sleek, modern aesthetic was a poignant juxtaposition to the sombre backdrop of World War I.

As we reflect on the rich tapestry of history surrounding engagement rings, it becomes clear that these timeless symbols hold profound significance across cultures and centuries. From their humble beginnings in ancient rituals to their status as cherished symbols of love and commitment today, engagement rings continue to captivate. Whether adorned with diamonds, gemstones, or intricate designs, each ring tells a unique story of romance, tradition, and enduring beauty.
