What Is A Mechanical Watch?
Mechanical, or manual, watches are where the term “clockwork” originates from, as this is exactly how they work. By using a hand-winding method, the clockwork parts measure time in accurate intervals. The mainspring is wound, and this energy is sent through the gears to the balance wheel, which is weighted to ensure the time measurements are consistent. This energy is then sent to an escapement which creates the iconic tick that these kinds of watches are known for.
While many modern mechanical watches also make use of a watch jewel, similar to a quartz watch, they do not use them in the same way. Instead, it serves to help with friction inside of the device.
These mechanical watches are often hand wound, with the owner needing to keep track of how long it has been between winding the watch to ensure the time continues to tick. For many owners, this is a part of the charm.
