Originally launched in 1969, the Omega Flightmaster was a first of its kind, with many radical features and a unique design. At first glance, the Omega Flightmaster may seem very complex, with its 7 hands, 3 crowns and 2 pushers. However, due to its clever design, the Omega Flightmaster is simple to use and easy to read.
At the time, Omega watches were a staple wristwear for pilots and astronauts, particularly the Omega Speedmaster, this led to the engineers at Omega deciding to create a watch that suited the needs for pilots. The Omega Flightmaster is based on the same c.861 movements of the Speedmaster, but with many added functions that help pilots in flight.
The Omega Flightmaster is made with the highest quality materials. The case is cut from a single block of Swedish stainless steel, and pressed into a unique shape that makes it a comfortable fit. The watch also underwent extreme testing to make it suitable for pilots. The tempered mineral glass crystal can withstand the forces in space, which is evident when it was worn by the astronaut Alexia Leonov in 1975 during the American-Soviet Appollo Soyouz test mission, where the space race formally ended with the first handshake in space.
Omega Flightmaster Models
Omega created two versions of the Flightmaster watch, the c.910 and the c.911. The difference between these two timepieces is that the c.911 has a constant seconds hand. There is also a special gold version of the Omega Flightmaster, weighing in at over 240g, it is one of the heaviest chronographs Omega ever produced. Here at Ramsdens Jewellery, we stock preowned Omega Flightmaster watches, so our stock changes regularly but you may find a range of these models.
Omega Flightmaster Features
The Flightmaster has many unique features that make it ideal for pilots. This watch comes with a second hand operated by the revolving bezel, allowing the user to see a second time zone on the blue hand. For pilots, this is extremely useful as they can see the local time zone as well as the time zone they are heading towards. The two subdials, operated using the orange/yellow pushers on the right hand side of the watch allow the pilot to record flight times and other operations.
The Omega Flightmaster watches were all manufactured with red coloured hands unless, for special request, yellow cadmium coated hands were installed so that pilots could read the watch when in the cockpit under infer red light.
One of the most distinctive features of this watch is the design on the case back. All Flightmaster watches included an outline of the Jetliner DC-8 Super 61, again indicating the target user for this chronograph watch.
Omega Flightmaster Sizing
The Omega Flightmaster is a large watch that takes up most of the wrist. Measuring at a length of 52mm and a width of 46mm, this watch is considered quite hefty, although due to its clever design of the hidden lugs, it fits comfortably within the contours of the wrist. Visit our watch sizing guide for more information on selecting the correct watch size.
Due to the hefty size, the Omega Flightmaster is considered to be a men’s Omega watch. Although women can also wear the Flightmaster watch, there weren’t any Omega Flightmas-ters specifically designed for women. However, at Ramsdens, we have a vast selection of Omega watches.
When you buy a used Omega Flightmaster with Ramsdens, you can be sure you are getting a high quality purchase. All of our Omega Flightmaster watches are individually assessed and valued by our experts before going on sale, so you can be confident that your new piece is entirely genuine and in complete working order.
With the complexities and radical functions, the Flightmaster watch needs to be taken care of, especially with the colour coded pushers and 7 hands. We have a watch care and cleaning guide which will help you make sure that your watch stays in pristine condition and holds its value.
