Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual was introduced in the 1950’s and is still going strong today. The early models shared the same movement as some of the early Rolex Submariner models.

The Oyster Perpetual has classic clean lines and an uncluttered dial and is currently the entry level Rolex watch. Early models did not feature a date function and were smaller than the models being produced today. Nowadays there is the Oyster Perpetual and the Oyster Perpetual Date models which are available in both ladies and gents sizes. Rolex have increased the case size in line with modern trends and this model can now be purchased with a case size from 26mm right up to 39mm.

The Oyster Perpetual is a beautiful watch with classic lines and is barely distinguishable from it’s big brother; the Rolex DateJust.

Rolex DateJust

If you think of Rolex Watches, chances are you will have an image of the DateJust in your mind.

The DateJust was released circa 1945 and was the first watch ever to change the date automatically at 12 o'clock midnight. Rolex added the 'cyclops' to the glass around 1954, which magnified the date to make it easier to read at a glance. The 'cyclops' is now fitted to almost all Rolex watches that have a date function, although there are some exceptions.

The classic DateJust design has stood the test of time and has evolved over the years. Case sizes have increased to fall in line with current trends, yet the watch always retains its classic look of the early models.

The DateJust has always been one of the most recognisable watches in the world.

Rolex Submariner

The iconic Rolex Submariner is undoubtedly the most recognisable divers watch in the world today. Originally released around 1953 as a professional divers watch, the Submariner can be worn daily on the wrist and not look out of place in any surroundings.

Early Submariner models have been known to fetch high prices in auction especially the versions worn by James Bond in the movies.

The Submariner or “Subby” as it is often known, is also the most copied watch in the world both by counterfeiters and watch manufacturers. As a result of this, Rolex have introduced many anti-counterfeiting features through the years and continue to do so to this very day. Whilst there are many copies out there, they pale in comparison to the genuine article. A little known fact is Rolex manufacture their own steel which is a very high grade, hard wearing and heavier material than the steel used on most watches in the world.

Steel Submariner models are very popular watches for collectors and often go up in value as time goes by. Some models like the 50th anniversary edition have a Green bezel around the dial and are also highly sought after. Models with Green Dials and Bezels are known as “Hulk” Submariners and are highly desirable in the watch collecting world.

Rolex GMT

The Rolex GMT Master was introduced around 1954 and was a watch born from necessity. Originally developed in collaboration with Pan Am Airways for Pilots and crews on long haul flights. While the GMT looks very much like its stablemate the Submariner, there is one very big difference and that is the introduction of a “second time zone” which allowed the wearer to tell the time in two time zones simultaneously due to the addition of the arrow shaped GMT hand.

As with the Submariner model, early GMT models can fetch good prices at auction and certain variants are highly sought after like the Ref:6542 which was the first GMT model released.

It is quite common to hear people refer to some GMT’s as “Pepsi bezel” or “Coke bezel” models. This name was derived from the two colours used in the bezel inserts. Pepsi has the Blue and Red bezel and Coke bezels are Black and Red.

Rolex has recently re-introduced these popular bezels, only now they are made in a highly scratch resistant ceramic material manufactured by Rolex themselves.

The GMT is yet another instantly recognisable model from Rolex and is a classic sports watch.

Rolex Day-Date

The Rolex Day-Date is one of the higher end Rolex models and is solely produced with precious metals and always has been. This model has apertures on the watch dial for both the Day of the week and the Date hence the name 'Day-Date'.

Earlier models were difficult to set, however through the years Rolex have introduced various features to make this task easier finally resulting in the full quick set model in 1988. The quick set allows the wearer to change the day, date and time independently of each other.

Day-Date models are very expensive when bought new and pre-owned models are highly sought after due to the huge savings that can be made when comparing the costs to new. The Day-Date bracelet is known as a 'president' bracelet and indeed this model has been worn by many presidents throughout the years. The Day-Date now comes in a slightly larger case size to fit in with modern trends. The Day-Date II was a 41mm case however Rolex have now settled for a more discreet 40mm case size on new Day-Date models.

Rolex Explorer

The Rolex Explorer was introduced around 1954 and has remained virtually unchanged to this day. All Explorers have a black dial with Arabic numbers at the 3’ 6’ and 9’ position and do not have a date function.

The dial was designed to be easily readable at a glance in any weather condition. Many famous explorers have worn this Rolex including Edmund Hilary while climbing Everest. The case size has increased from 36mm to 39mm in line with modern trends and Sapphire crystal is now used on the glass due to its hard wearing properties.

Very early Explorer models have become popular with collectors and models from the mid 50’s command the highest prices at auction.
