THE CONNELL EFFECT: HOW TO CHOOSE AND STYLE A CHAIN NECKLACE FOR MEN

Since the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People hit our screens back in May, it seems a lot of men have been looking to up their jewellery game. And it’s all thanks to the standout star of the show: the simple chain necklace Paul Mescal wore in his role as Connell Waldron.

Social media users have gone absolutely wild for this fashionable but understated accessory, and one fan even went as far to set up an Instagram account for @ConnellsChain, which has already amassed more than 180,000 followers.

In response to the huge fan base his jewellery has garnered, Paul has decided to auction it off to raise funds for Pieta, a Dublin-based charity that provides mental health support for those in need. Of course, only one lucky person will be able to win that auction but, if you still want to add a dash of Connell’s style to your looks, you can always buy a chain of your own! Here, we’ll take you through choosing the right one, and how to style it.

Choose your metal wisely

Whenever you’re picking out a new piece of jewellery, one of the first questions you should ask yourself is whether you want something gold- or silver-toned. If you already wear a watch, ring, or bracelet on a daily basis, it’s usually best to pick out a chain made from the same metal. However, if you don’t tend to wear any accessories, it’s completely up to you!

If you need more guidance, think about the colours you typically wear. If your palette tends to be on the warmer side — perhaps you love burgundies and browns — gold jewellery will complement your looks perfectly. But, if your wardrobe is on the cooler side, with plenty of blues, greys, and greens, silver is ideal!

Consider all of the different styles of chain

Whether you want to follow in Connell’s footsteps very closely with an especially simply chain, or you would like to go with more of a statement look loosely inspired by the character, you need to know which kind of chain you’re looking for. Here, we’ll take you through three of the most popular styles so you can make an informed decision.

Curb chains

When you think of a men’s necklace, chances are a curb chain will spring to mind. This style of necklace is very popular, thanks to its simple and timeless design, which is made up of interconnected uniform links. They’re designed to lay flat against your chest.

One of the main benefits of opting for a curb chain is that they’re available in a range of different weights. So, whether you’re looking for something light and subtle, or you prefer a chunkier necklace, you’ll be able to find one in this style.

Belcher chains

Belcher chains are another timeless classic. Also known as rolo chains, these types of necklaces are made from round or oval links that are interlocked. It’s definitely one of the most versatile chain styles out there. One of these will look stylish on its own, but they also do a great job of supporting pendants, so you can change up your look in this way quite easily.

We have lots of men’s belcher chain necklaces in stock here at Ramsdens Jewellery, so make sure you check out our range to find a cool and versatile accessory you can wear for years to come.

Figaro chains

If you’re looking for a necklace that’s on the more ornate side, a figaro chain will suit you perfectly. As you can see, this type of chain is made using links of varying lengths, for an interesting but timeless twist on a classic. Figaro chains are available in a variety of different weights, which means you can go for a subtle look, or choose one that’s going to have more of an impact.

We have a whole range of men’s figaro chain necklaces here at Ramsdens Jewellery, so make sure you take a look if you’re a fan of this style of chain.

Choose the right length

If you’ve ever bought a necklace for yourself or a loved one, you’ll know that they also come in different lengths, so you’ll need to decide which one is going to work well for you. If you’re happy for your new jewellery to be on show, whether you’re wearing a T-shirt, jumper, or open-collared shirt, a shorter chain that’s around 20 inches in length will work well for you. If you plan to wear it every day but would like the option to tuck it into your top on certain occasions, something longer is likely to be more suitable. A 24- or 26-inch chain will help to give you the look you’re going for.

Style it just right

As we’ve mentioned, chain necklaces are simple and versatile, which means you can often just throw one on and go. But there are some tricks you can use to rack up extra style points.

For example, when you pick out a top to wear with your new necklace, you need to ensure the neckline is going to work well with it. Your T-shirts should either have a high neck so your chain can sit on top of them, or a lower cut like a V-neck, so people can actually see your accessory and it doesn’t just get lost with your neckline.

If you’re looking to make a bold statement with your new jewellery, you could add a pendant to your new chain, or even layer it with one or two others. For a stylish, mismatched look, make sure you choose chains of varying lengths and thicknesses.

Men’s chain necklaces have become a lot more popular since Normal People hit our screens, and it’s about time they made a comeback. Take these tips on board and you’ll be able to wear your new necklace with confidence.
